Keep, Pass On or Sell: How to Sort Your Belongings When You Downsize in Lodi

How do I sort my belongings when I downsize?
The easiest way to sort your belongings is one room at a time, with three simple piles: keep, pass on and sell. Deciding what goes where is often the hardest part of downsizing, and you don't have to figure it out alone.

What goes in each pile?
Here's how I'd think about the three piles.
💛 Keep: what you love and will use. Picture your next home first. Read what to look for in a smaller home, then keep the pieces that fit the life you want there.
🎁 Pass on: the treasures with a story. Family pieces can go to the people who'll cherish them, and it's a lovely chance to share the stories behind them.
🏷️ Sell: everything that's ready for a new home. This pile frees up space and can put a little money back in your pocket. I'll point you to people who can help with this part. What mistake should I avoid?
⏰ Trying to do the whole house in one weekend. One room at a time is plenty. You'll never be rushed with me, and how long downsizing takes shows how we plan the timing around you.
What could this look like for me?
Here's a made-up example. Say your grown kids live out of town. You could set aside the pieces you'd like them to have, and they can decide on their own schedule. Worried about leaning on family too much? Read how to downsize without burdening your family.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should my home be empty before we list it?
Not necessarily. Staging is very important, especially in a vacant home, because it gets you more money. In most cases, I pay for the staging consultation, and you pay for the staging itself.
Where do we meet to talk about selling?
Usually at your kitchen table. Listing appointments happen in your home, where you're comfortable.
What if I change my mind about something I put in the sell pile?
That's completely fine. Nothing is final until it leaves the house, so take your time and move things between piles as often as you like.
